The East Riding Museums Service collects archaeological material from across the whole of the East Riding, working in collaboration with Hull Museums Service. We accept archives from excavations subject to our deposition guidelines.

More information about archaeology in the Museums Service is available by following the links on the left.

Services we provide

We put on displays based on the permanent collections and also temporary exhibitions produced in partnership with other museums, excavation units, local societies and metal detector users.

We also provide archaeology-related workshops, events and lectures which are advertised at our museum sites and through the media. Lectures to local groups and societies can be arranged by prior appointment.

We offer an object identification service for artefacts whether found by metal detecting or by chance discovery and can advise on care/conservation of artefacts.

In addition the Museums Service can provide CPD and Inset training for teachers about archaeology for the new curriculum. More information is available on the Learning page.

Services we do not provide

Enquiries with regard to sites and monuments should generally be directed to the Humber Archaeology Partnership (HAP). More information can be found at the Hull City Council website.

Hull City Council (external website)

Likewise, the Museums Service is not involved in carrying out / commissioning fieldwork and enquiries with regard to tendering for archaeological work should also be made to HAP.

For professional/ethical reasons we are unable to offer valuations on any artefacts. Enquirers should instead contact a reputable antiquities dealer.
